SDPD Update on Bicyclist Citations

As part of the SDPD’s promise to continue a dialogue with the City’s cyclists, Lt. O’Hanlon of Traffic Patrol looked into whether patrol officers were targeting San Diegan cyclists exclusively or unfairly.

Lt. O’Hanlon reported that in the eight months beginning in January 2011, only 52 citations had been given to cyclists for a variety of traffic violations. He reported that in that same time frame, more than 100,000 citations had been issued to drivers. He also looked into the geographic locations on where these citations were issued and found that they were scattered all around the city, indicating that no single officer was targeting cyclists, exclusively.

Lt. O’Hanlon also reported that all patrol officers have received training on all the rules and exceptions of the vehicle code that apply to cyclists.
