Increasing Bike Infrastructure Increases the Number of Cyclists on the Roads

Streetfilms posted a video reflecting on the dividends being gained from New York City’s investment into building more bike specific infrastructure. In the last three years, New York City has added over 200 miles of bike lanes. Just this simple paint lines on the road has brought in that most coveted group to ride more – women. The video shows women who have specifically begun to ride, and ride more often as a result of their city’s dedication to increasing the number of cyclists.

Later this week I will be posting an article about missing bike lanes on Imperial Avenue. Here in San Diego, self-identified bicycle advocates are less interested in increasing the number of cyclists on the roads than the City of San Diego is. This realization has been very disheartening to the advocates who very much want to increase the number of cyclists that ride our streets on a daily basis.

For now, take inspiration from the wonderful things a city on the other side of the country is doing to allocate the road space to all users in an equitable manner.
