Full Moon Bike Ride

The Sheldon Brown ride will end just in time to join the Full Moon Riders who will be celebrating the full moon. The ride starts at 10 PM at the Chee Chee Club located downtown at 929 Broadway

The rides can be in celebration in celebration of getting closure of one cyclist’s death. The man who was responsible for the death of Jim Swarzman, a local cyclist who was killed while on a randonneuring ride earlier this year, was convicted at the trial. Sentencing is scheduled  for September 12, 2011.

Meanwhile, efforts to implement an anti-harassment ordinance  is underway in Los Angeles. What will such an ordinance mean? In part,

This allows cyclists to make their case if the police are unable, or unwilling, to follow through and make their case for them.  Nobody found guilty of violating this ordinance will got o jail, it empowers victims to go to civil court, not criminal court; but cyclists can press charges at civil court in addition to any criminal charges.  Of perhaps greater importance is the language allowing cyclists to recoup legal costs.  If the only damage is to a bicycle, which may not cost a lot of money, it wasn’t always worth a lawyer’s time to take bike crash cases, even if they were easy wins, because the funds collected might not equal said lawyers fee.

Does expensive street parking in a city make it awesome? Our friends writing for streetsblog seem to think so,

Parking, like driving, is heavily subsidized in the US. In 2002, according to Donald Shoup, author ofThe High Cost of Free Parking, the total subsidy for off-street parking alone was between $127 and $374 billion in 2002

That’s about as much time as I have to write about cheery news for now. I’ll write about some bad news next week, but for now, ride safe and enjoy the weekend.
