City of San Diego

  • As deferred maintenance costs reach nearly a billion dollars the San Diego City Council is looking at new ways to fund infrastructure maintenance.
  • Not being able to bring much joy to San Diego on the gridiron, the San Diego Chargers gave away over 200 bikes at Edison Elementary school; also military contractor BAE Systems will be giving away 670 bikes to military families.
  • A mother and her 2 year-old were hit by a car while biking on Sunset Cliffs Blvd and West Point Loma Blvd.
  • The city council did not change the status of the Fay Avenue Bike Path to dedicated open space due to various legal hurdles.
  • The San Diego MTS has raised its prices, hopefully they will use the money to improve their service and expand their bicycle capacity.

San Diego Region

  • SANDAG’s 200 billion dollar transportation plan was found to be illegal by the San Diego County Superior Court.  The court found that the plan did not comply with California clean air laws.  Whether the plan will need to be totally redone remains to be seen.  The lawsuit was brought by the Cleveland National Forest Foundation, the Center for Biological Diversity, the Sierra Club California,  CREED-21, and the Affordable Housing Coalition of San Diego County, also Attorney General Kamala Harris intervened in support.
  • The Amgen Tour of California will be in Escondido next year, the city is excited as it is “a huge opportunity to boost the city’s image and reputation with tourists and developers planning housing projects or business parks” . . . what about bikes?

Elsewhere

  • In Chicago and Dallas cyclists face many of the same challenges we do in San Diego. But they have a 3 feet passing law in Chicago, and Dallas has city council members like Angela Hunt showing leadership on bike issues.
  • 16 US cities have started installing bicycle traffic lights (to my knowledge San Diego is not one of them).
  • In Norman Oklahoma support for bike facilities is growing.
