Job Description (Part Time) Executive Director, Bike SD

Bike San Diego is hiring an Executive Director, who primarily has experience in nonprofit management and fund development. A candidate with a passion for creating more safer bicycle infrastructure, bicycle riding and action on the climate crisis is highly desirable. 

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for managing the overall affairs of Bike San Diego, including  implementation of the 2021 BikeSD strategic plan, and reporting progress to the Board of Directors at its monthly meetings. The ED will work with a broad set of stakeholders, including board members, community partners, government agencies, media, and an active membership and donor base. 

The ED manages, develops, and empowers the organization’s supporters to conduct effective bicycle advocacy. The ED is responsible for managing the organizational budget and fundraising through cultivating individual donors and business partner relationships. The ED must connect and engage with our diverse members, and work to expand our member and donor base. Weekend and evening work will be required to attend board meetings, fundraising events, member programs, etc.

Hours and Compensation:

10 – 15 hours per week, part time position – an excellent entry-level opportunity for those seeking a career in non-profit advocacy. Pay range commensurate with experience: $25.00 – $35.00 per hour

Principal Responsibilities:

Fundraising and Financial Sustainability 50%

The Executive Director works with the Board of Directors to oversee the financial sustainability of Bike San Diego, including these duties:

  • Ensure sufficient financial resources through a variety of funding sources
    • demonstrated experience with grant applications, grants winning and implementing successful grant programs
    • Donor cultivation and member relations
    • Plan and manage fundraising events, fundraising drives or initiatives
  • Manage financial needs of Bike San Diego using cash flow, project, and program budgets, annual budgets, and long term strategic planning
  • Monitor financial status of Bike San Diego through monthly reports to the Treasurer or any accountant services and budget analysis

Non-Profit Administration and Organization 20%

Work with the Board of Directors and volunteers to run the organization’s internal and external actions that implement Bike San Diego’s strategic plan. Duties include:

  • Serve as primary staff to the Board of Directors
  • Manage organizational policies and processes
  • Organize meetings, keep track of tasks and workflow management
  • Negotiate contracts and other agreements with partners
  • Maintain legal records of organization and ensure compliance with non-profit laws including tax and regulatory filings
  • Manage any Bike San Diego staff or outside vendors and contractors
  • Office management and organization

Advocacy, Outreach & Programs Support 30% 

Responsible for ensuring the public and government partners understand organizational mission, values and works to promote the benefits biking brings to our community. Duties include:

  • Communication and advocacy campaign development and execution, including emails, social media, press releases, press conferences, meetings with policy makers, and comment letters
  • Empower Bike San Diego’s volunteers to develop and carry out a wide range of campaigns, programs, events and advocacy
  • Offer guidance on concrete advocacy, policy and media tactics
  • Act as an effective spokesperson and inspiring public representative for Bike San Diego
  • Cultivate and maintain productive relationships with policy makers
  • Maintain all Bike San Diego social media accounts

Location:

While this position can be done remotely, there are some activities that will require being in person. Our office is located in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego, CA.

Required Skills:

  • Budget development and management
  • Google Suite or equivalent 
  • Calendar and Scheduling management experience
  • Fundraising and/or Grant writing experience (1 year)
  • Donor relationship cultivation
  • Communications skills, including letter writing and email campaigns

Skills Strongly Preferred:

  • Fund development for nonprofits (1-2 years)
  • Copywriting for digital communications tools like Mailchimp
  • Flipcause (optional)
  • Social media communications experience
  • Graphic Design (Canva, Photoshop, etc.)
  • Non-profit administration and management experience
