County wants you to discover your parks and ride in them

The County of San Diego Parks and Recreation is organizing their first annual “Discover Your Parks And Ride Biking and Camping Event” which will be a two day weekend adventure at Lake Morena County Park to introduce families and groups to camping, outdoor entertainment, and some of San Diego’s premier road and mountain bike opportunities.

The event is geared for all types of riders and sounds like a weekend filled with fun:

Bike riders can choose to partake in a 48.5 or 62 mile ride on a road bike, an 8 or 12 mile ride on a mountain bike, a kid friendly 4 mile ride around the Lake Morena campground for kids 16 and younger, or a bike rodeo and skills challenge for kids 9 and younger.

Event Location: Lake Morena County Park, 2550 Lake Morena Drive, Campo, CA 91906
Registration Closing Date:  Friday, October 5, 2012 @ 11:59 PM PST

Biking Category:

  • 48.5 or 62 mile road bike ride through Campo region (16+ older)*
  • 8 or 12 mile mountain bike ride (16+ older)*
  • 4 mile kid friendly mountain bike ride around Lake Morena County Park (16 and younger)*
  • Kids bike rodeo and skills challenge (9 and younger)*
    *Youth under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult

Registration Includes:

  • Supported road or mountain bike ride on Saturday, October 13
  • Youth bicycle skills clinic and bike rodeo
  • Youth bicycle ride around Lake Morena County Park
  • SAG and mechanical support along the route
  • An outdoor movie in the park for campers on Saturday evening
  • Ranger guided interpretive hikes on Sunday

Other Activities Include:

  • Nightly camping
  • Daily breakfast
  • Dinner on Saturday evening
  • Fishing and boat rentals

I asked Shannon Singler, the Marketing and Public Outreach Manager for the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation, what participants can expect from the event and she responded by saying “the County Parks and Recreation Department is hoping that families and groups will get to experience the outdoors at Lake Morena County Park with camping, a bike ride, fishing, boating, and a movie under the stars. This is a great opportunity to introduce families to the camping experience and take advantage of a ride that will be fun for novice and experienced riders.”
