This weekend San Diego will be hosting the annual Blogher Conference in downtown San Diego. Blogher is a online community that was created by and for women bloggers. One of Blogher’s attendees will be Sarah Gilbert who writes at Urban Mamas and maintains a personal blog at Cafe Mama. Gilbert, who lives car-free with her husband and three sons, is a self described “family biking evangelist” . One of her advocacy efforts that garnered a lot of praise and attention was getting Portland’s Burgerville, a burger chain based in the North West, to change their policy to include bicycles in their drive thru lanes. This policy change certainly went a long way into ensuring that bicycle was a legitimate form of transportation.

I invited Gilbert to give a talk about what it is like to live without a personal automobile while raising three sons, which can be challenging. But she also did so while her husband was deployed overseas until very recently. Despite living in a bicycling mecca that is Portland, raising a family can be a challenge. It can be more of a challenge when the transportation structure is built around the automobile and one has to repeatedly deal with the public perception that owning a personal automobile is a necessity in order to raise a family. So how does she do it with such grace and aplomb? Gilbert will be sharing her experiences at:

Velo Cult Bike Shop on Thursday, August 4th, 2011.

Address: 2220 Fern Street, San Diego.

Time: 7PM.
