Kill a Cyclist in San Diego, Get Probation

One year ago, Arthur Newman drove his BMW into (and killed) Walter Joller, who was riding in a bike lane with lights and reflective vest on Sabre Springs Parkway. Newman was apparently not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, just inattentive to the blinking, reflective presence to his right. For this act of gross negligence, Newman today received just three years probation, 100 hours of volunteer work, 20 days of public service, and a fine of $700. That's the cost of a law-abiding human life, apparently, in San Diego.

Focus for the SDCBC in 2010: The Urban Core

Kathy Keehan, Executive Director of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition

To conclude 2009, the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition held a board retreat in order to decide the focus of the Coalition's efforts in 2010. One of the conclusions that was reached at the retreat was to place more advocacy efforts on the 'urban core' in the city of San Diego.

Reasons for doing so were based on the growing numbers of young, energetic bicycle advocates who resided in the urban core. Kathy Keehan, Executive Director for the SDCBC, has been actively working with the bicycling community to promote bicycling in San Diego. The urban core has been loosely defined as being bordered by the 8 on the north, the 94 on the south, Harbor Drive on the west and 70th on the east.

San Diego has a long way to go to become a vanguard in bicycling. What would you suggest are the biggest problems the urban core faces? Use this as an open thread to discuss:

Creating a walkable downtown in Oceanside

Oceanside, a seaside community in North San Diego County, is making great strides in making their downtown more walkable. The North County Times is reporting that Oceanside's planners want visitors to "to get out of their cars to shop and dine and make it so people who live nearby feel comfortable taking an evening stroll through downtown."

Oceanside's planners want more input from the residents and have scheduled a public workshopfrom 6 - 8PM this Thursday (January 7, 2010) at the main library community room located at 330 N. Coast Highway.

Inspiration for Oceanside comes from a community south of Oceanside in Bird Rock where traffic calming measures have resulted in a boom to businesses.
