On taking one’s time

A BikeSD.org reader, Travis N. sent in the submission below. It is advice worth heeding. Thank you Travis for sending this in. Glad you weren’t hurt any worse. Ride safe.

What was the rush?  That’s the question I have been asking myself several times since a nasty spill while riding to work last week.  In an effort to save perhaps 2-3 minutes, I attempted to remove my jacket while in motion rather than stop for a moment.  I suppose I was thinking that I’ve done it before.  As I removed my backpack from one shoulder, I lost control of it, and it ended up wedged between the front tire and fork.  I ended up on the pavement.  Hard.  I blacked out for a few minutes, according to a few caring motorists who stopped to assist.  For my haste, I received 14 stitches on my cheek, a broken bone in my hand, bruised ribs, and road rash on face, hands, and leg.

I’ve ridden for years without incident.  One mental lapse resulted in a major accident.  I thought I’d share in case it helps someone remember to stay alert.
