In Dueling Petitions to SANDAG: The Demand for Safer Streets Trumps Driver Convenience

Uptown Planners member Chris Ward has called for a special Uptown Planners meeting that will be held this Tuesday at 6PM. The issue: is driver convenience through Uptown more important than people’s lives? An Uptown community led campaign to close University Avenue at Washington Street over safety concerns is being opposed by other Uptown residents and businesses.

Two petitions have sprung up, both initiated by local Uptown residents. One petition to SANDAG demands that driver convenience be maintained and the other requests that a safer University Avenue be created for everyone – not just drivers. As of this morning, safety is leading over driver convenience.

We will ride to the Special Uptown Planners meeting from the Joyce Beers Community Center.

After the Uptown Planners meeting we will be holding a candle light vigil to remember all the San Diegans who’ve lost their lives on our city streets. Traffic deaths are preventable. Yet, to some Uptown residents your lives are completely irrelevant and insignificant. Any attempt to make our city streets safer for everyone is dismissed. Make your voices heard and let’s not forget the lives of San Diegans that have been lost.
