City of San Diego

• A bicyclist was injured by an SUV after the cyclist ran a red light in the downtown area.
• Mark Kersey has been selected to chair the city’s Infrastructure Committee.  Perhaps the city should look at restructuring its infrastructure budget process.

San Diego Region

• Roundabouts and traffic calming measures get some praise in the Union Tribune.
• After its loss in court SANDAG has agreed to negotiate with the plaintiffs instead of appealing the decision.
• Bicycle lanes seem to be more common as part of proposed real estate developments: Imperial Beach, Mission Valley, and possibly Mission Bay.
• San Diego’s Bikes Count program has gotten some good press lately: KPBS, IVN, SanDiego6.
• UCSD scientists have created an air pollution sensor that works with smart phones.  Cyclists who used the sensor found that they were exposed to more air pollution when commuting by bike than when commuting by car.  Also they could reduce their exposure to air pollution by riding one block over from busy streets.
• San Diego Bicycle Coalition has announced their Golden Gear Awards.
• Bicycle Warehouse has opened a new store in Chula Vista.
• Plans are in the works to create a more bike and pedestrian friendly Eighth Street Corridor in National City.
• Pacific Coast Cycles in Oceanside has received an award from the Adventure Cycling Association.

Elsewhere

• In London cyclists point out the importance of safe cycling infrastructure in order to increase the number of cyclists.
• In New York the Prospect Park bike lane has been put on hold after legal challenges, opponents point to loss of parking, increased traffic, and danger to pedestrians.  Also the Columbus Avenue bike land failed to gain approval for a proposed extension.
